Foreign music in sixteenth century Coimbra


Several of the music manusctipts from the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra provide vivid testimony of the importing, study and performance of music which came to Coimbra in printed editions from nothern Europe and Italy. This paper surveys the latest state of knowledge about this fascinating example of musical reception, and consideres the reworking of music by Nicolas Gombert by the copyist of his music at Santa Cruz.
