In the Library in the R&D Building and the General Library of the FCSH it is possible to find and consult a range of publications and scores belonging to the CESEM collection.

Since its foundation, CESEM has invested in building up a collection which now forms part of and can be consulted in the library of the R&D Building. It is particularly rich in critical editions of major composers and bibliography published in the last 10 years in Europe and the United Stares of America. It currently holds 3600 volumes divided into the following categories:

  • Dictionaries/encyclopaedias and other general reference works (on paper, CD-Rom, online subscription). Among these are the recent editions of the principal publications in this scientific area: the second edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (housed in the open-shelf reference section of the General Library) and Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart.
  • Monographs / Essays / Collective publications.
  • Periodical publications.
  • Scores / Printed music. They include the complete critical and monumental editions of the following composers of reference to the history of Western Music, whose complete works were not yet available in critical editions in any library in the country: Alban Berg, Berlioz, Debussy, Donizetti, Eisler, Gabrieli, Gluck, Haendel, Janácek, Mendelssohn, Pergolesi, Rossini, Scarlatti, Schönberg, Schubert, Schumann, Schütz, Telemann, Verdi, Vivaldi. The collection also acquired the complete works of Stockhausen and various works by contemporary composers, such as Berio, Kagel, Ligeti, Messiaen. Other works available on the market by Portuguese composers (66 volumes) have also been obtained, among which works by Croner de Vasconcellos, Luiz Costa, Joly Braga Santos, Clotilde Rosa, Armando José Fernandes, Ivo Cruz, Vianna da Motta, António Pinho Vargas, Luís Tinoco, Constança Capdeville.
  • Microfilms of manuscripts of Portuguese music preserved in foreign libraries and archives.
